Diane L Beard - IDAL 2021 Candidacy Statement

It is an honor to be nominated to serve on the IDAL board.

I am very passionate about the Decorative Arts and the organization IDAL that serves to promote our industry.

I have been a member of SALI/IDAL since 1995. From my first convention in Philadelphia to the latest convention in Charlotte I have learned and networked with other fellow artisans from around the world.

With 28 years of Decorative Painting experience and continued training I have a large knowledge base to rely on. I am a member of our local IDAL group, Decorative Artisans of the Carolinas. While a member of DAC I have served as Vice President and am currently Treasurer. While working in these positions, I have helped with scheduling guest instructors and coordinating meeting topics. This experience will be a valuable tool to use as a member of the IDAL board.

I have won the regional Top Job award from American Painting Contractor four times and the national decorative painting award Picture It Painted Professionally two times for Interior Decorative Painting from Painting and Decorative Contractors of America. My trip to Italy with Gary Lord, Melanie Royals and Allison Wooley taught me the true meaning of being a team player while working with thirty-five other decorative artists from around the world.

Owning my own business has taught me business skills that I utilize daily.  I am very organized and reliable with great time management skills. I am a good communicator with great social skills. When I start a project I am committed to completing it.

I would like to be on this board because it is a wonderful way to help other members. I also want to give back to an organization that has done so much to further and promote my career. As a member of the board, I would like to bring the decorative arts to a younger generation to continue this wonderful profession. I would like to work with Art and Design schools to educate them about decorative arts as a career opportunity. I look forward to serving the decorative arts community and appreciate your consideration.

Bryan King IDAL 2021 Candidacy Statement

Bryan King is the owner of Artifice, Inc who has been executing murals, commissioned paintings and decorative finishes in the Washington, DC metropolitan region since 1986. Bryan’s business focus is on mural painting, but he also has a strong background in gilding, decorative lime plasters, and faux finishes

His murals grace the exterior surfaces of many buildings in the region, and the interiors of dozens of restaurants, businesses, and private residences. He is a recipient of the Washington Building Congress Award for Craftsmanship, as well as a past instructor of mural painting for the Smithsonian Institution’s Resident Associate program.

He is a member of the Salon, an international organization of many of the best decorative artisans practicing today. This exposure has inspired a deep understanding of the level of craftsmanship that is attainable. From his long career in the trade in a sophisticated market, as well his international exposure, he has developed a keen sense of the ways the field has changed and continues to evolve. With many years of continuing education at conventions and decorative finishing schools, he has honed his craft and developed relationships with many decorative artisans.

Bryan believes this lifetime of experience, friendships, and education will be a great asset to the IDAL board. Bryan received his B.F.A. from Carnegie-Mellon University and his M.F.A. from Cranbrook Academy of Art.

Dean Sickler - IDAL 2021 Candidacy Statement

My name is Dean Sickler. I started a decorative painting company called Dundean Studios in 1986 and have been pushing around paint and plaster my entire career. I taught decorative finishing while still contracting for 20 years until I closed my shop in 2016.

In 2017 I joined Golden Paintworks as their Commercial Education Specialist.  I was on the Board of the Paint and Decorating Contractors of America for many years and was a founding member of the Decorative Alliance Forum and MAFDA.

I was President of the Mid-Atlantic Council in 2014, President of my local IDAL chapter from 2018-2020 and have been a participant in the International Salon since 2001.

I have always been a strong advocate for trade associations and think IDAL is in an excellent position to do great things for its members.  We have almost no voice as single contractors but together we are strong and can make a difference for ourselves and future decorative artisans.

Jennifer Walls IDAL 2021 Candidacy Statement

I am Jennifer Walls.  Years ago, I discovered a passion for doing faux finishing.  I was home schooling my three children and needed a working schedule that complimented my commitment to them.  I found the creative process was liberating and my entrepreneurial spirit kicked in and I was onto a new path.

I started WallstoWalls in 2002.  I specialize in transforming commercial and residential spaces through traditional painting or customized decorative finishes.  Whether refinishing kitchen cabinets, furniture, or transforming something from drab to fab, the vision becomes reality.

With 20 years in business, I have mastered painting techniques and stay current with trends in finishes. I have been an active member of IDAL since 2007.  IDAL has been instrumental in helping me hone my skills and develop my personal style.  I have been able to acquire trade knowledge and I am always learning new finishes that will wow my clients.

Today, my children are grown.  My business has grown continually and I still love to paint.  I now offer original artwork pieces as well.  I commit time weekly to networking with others and enjoy the benefits of that.

As my business has grown, I have made it a regular practice to hire novice painters, helping them grow professionally, not only in the craft, but also in relationships to clients.

IDAL laid the foundation for helping me to grow professionally.  I want to invest my time in moving the organization forward to meet the needs of the existing and growing membership.
