After 35 years of scenic painting in theater, I have learned ways to paint murals efficiently and with a quality usually seen on the easel. And I want to share them with you!

Join us as we paint a Sedona, AZ scene, using techniques from theater painting. Each 2’ x 3’ canvas is pre-gridded and cartooned for your convenience.

This method can get you off the ladder! You can work from large rolls of canvas “on the deck” and affix your completed painting to a wall or niche like wallpaper.

We will use a Cobalt Blue underpainting to quickly establish areas of value, add life and deepen the contrast and color.

Throughout the day, we will focus on strong composition, consistent light source and realistic color. We will use a limited number of colors and learn about the “Zorn palette” as a helpful way to achieve realistic color.

Each of us will be using GOLDEN Acrylic paint on 6sf of primed Fredrix canvas. You can use familiar tools, including cheese cloth, sponges and scumble brushes to achieve desired effects. We will review the best brushes to use for your murals. Brush sets will be available for purchase.

When your painting is completed and dry, you can roll it up for easy travel home. Voila!

Spend the day with us. We’ll have fun and learn a lot!

During the entirety of the years of Patricia’s decorative art career (over 34 years). She’s used a set of simple rules for artistic composition. The artists who follow these concepts are able to structure their compositions in ways that always create organic and believably real decorative finishes, and organic faux finishes. The rules also create a balance within a piece of art so that it never becomes boring or tiresome. They break the human tendency to structure our creations in a geometric or static composition patterns. Patricia says – “I consider these rules to be the single-greatest gift ever given to me as a painter.” When utilized and practiced, a competent crafts-person easily becomes a true artist.
