Extreme Layering and Textures Workshop

Students will first go through a color selection process where they will learn more about color and selecting complementary and contrasting colors. They will then plan and create a concept for their piece (students will work on a wooden panel with a decorative edge). Barb will share her tips and tricks on creating a highly textured surface and share her expert knowledge on how to beautifully layer colors and how best to pull it all together through distressing and finishing with clear and colored waxes. Students will also have the opportunity to further enhance their bespoke finish through the use of metallic gilding waxes.

She will also share an easy formula for estimating a billing rate and some great tips for spraying your finishes.

Verre Eglomise Techniques

Verre Eglomise is the art of working with gold and metal leaf and paint on the reverse side of glass. By using leaf and a gelatin-based size, you get a striking, mirror-finished work of art for architectural applications, furniture, and artistic applications. In this hands-on class, you will be creating designs of your own making, not copying my samples. You will learn how to handle gold and silver leaf, make and work with sizes, etch and draw into your leaf, and will experiment with paint and other items to bring your work to life. You will work on 4x6 inch glass and a larger 8 x 10 piece of tempered glass.

Students should bring paper towels, a sharpie marker, styro plates, a favorite stencil or design. Student grade tools will be provided for your use during the class, or you have the option to place an order before or after the class for a set of professional gilding tools for approximately $65 (you will need a gilding knife and 2 gilders tips). If you have your own tools, please bring them.

In this class David will demonstrate and walk you through a few of his “simply elegant” signature Bella Vista finishes. These simple recipes and techniques are proven successful money makers again and again, job after job. This class is set up to standardize application and help the level one applicator to improve their skill in short time. These finishes are ready to use on wall and ceiling. By the end of this class students will learn to use simple tools and just 3-4 layers to create 8 beautiful decorative finishes. It is a hands-on individually working class. Each student will create 8 finishes on polystyrene board after the class.

Chinese Fakeout

The lust for Chinese hand painted walloper has been with us since the 1700’s and shows no sign of waning. This class aims to give you the tools to create your own stenciled Chinoiserie murals and some practice with using them. In addition to stenciling walls these Chinoiserie murals can be created onto wallpaper and fabrics making them a perfect product to create from your studio. After discussion of ideas, materials and a brief history of the subject each student receives an extensive set of component stencils to create custom murals along with tips and techniques for achieving great results. A bordered, monochrome panel (or 2) will be created onto wallpaper which can be rolled and taken home. Students will experiment at their own pace with help from me. Participants wishing to purchase further Chinoiserie stencils from TSL’s collection will be given discount.

Moroccan Magic

Stencils are a versatile tool that can offer huge scope to the repertoire of decorative painters once a few basic techniques have been mastered.  The purpose of this class is to provide a good foundation on which to further build stenciling skills. It will give you the confidence to use stencils efficiently and successfully.  Students will learn to control the paint to achieve sharp imprints using stencil brushes and paint rollers. Overlays, pattern repeats, shading and blending color are all practiced on the class and planning will be discussed along with applications for different surfaces. 

Basic stencil kit including 5 assorted medium and large size stencil brushes. Also 1 x 2” foam paint roller and tray. I will bring some of my stencil brushes that can be bought at discount.

How to be an Expert Stenciller

There are common mistakes that beginners and more experienced stencilers make. This hands on class aims to help first timers to stencil successfully along with those that want to Improve. We will cover techniques with brushes and rollers, materials, paints, measuring.....I will offer as much advice and practice as I can within two hours and you will leave with confidence, knowledge and some stencils. This could be a stepping stone before students go on to learn the flashy, sassy techniques that are offered in other classes.

Students to bring basic kit, assorted good quality stencil brushes and a two inch foam roller with tray. I will bring stencil brushes that you can buy at a student discount.

Advanced Resin Techniques

Levi will demonstrate how to use the variety of our different epoxy products such as our countertop epoxy, wall epoxy, floor epoxy and casting resin. He will go over the differences in each product and why you would want to use them in different applications. Levi will lead the students on creating stone like samples including copper patina, soapstone, and white marble. Students will learn how these products are ideal for going over brand new countertops, floors and walls as well as re-coating existing surfaces.

Learn How to Create Beautiful Bas-Reliefs in Plaster for Ceilings and Walls

Class Description

In this class I want to introduce you to creating beautiful plaster reliefs. The main area of concentration is learning about plaster reliefs, how to work with many different plasters for carving, sculpting and casting, and how to use molds for plaster reliefs to expedite the creative process. Learning this process will enable you to create FASTandBEAUTIFULsculpted relief on walls and/or ceilings, that will rival any museum artwork.

What you will receive by taking this class:

·       An understanding of interior Bas Relief and what it takes to create these reliefs on walls and ceilings. 

·       Learn how to create sturdy & light weight, fine art panels of bas-relief to sell  

·       Learn mold making techniques and how to apply them to both interior and exterior relief art to expedite your work.

·       Learn carving, sculpting and texturing techniques in plaster.

·       Learn how to seal, paint, enhance and finish your reliefs for beauty and longevity. 

·       Learn how to use epoxy clay to enhance your reliefs and take-home samples of the clay.

Concrete Revolution: Wall and Floor

Exploring the various finishes and decorative side of concrete to create minimalist yet stylish environments.

Focus of Class: This is a hands on class based on one of the most versatile and modern finish: the Concrete effect, made trendy and contemporaneous by Novacolor most renowned products. This year will see the introduction of the flooring segment too, with Wall2floor, the micro cement system for the decoration of walls and floors. Expect to work and play with textures, color wash, liquid metal touch to create an infinity of effects all with the unique and original esthetic that characterizes the Concrete look.

Course Outcomes
At the end of this class, students will be familiar with Novacolor concrete effect products, the same as its system for wall and floor. They will explore the various possibilities to reproduce the concrete and marmorino effects using products of different nature, for contemporaneous and minimalist environments in line with the actual trends in architecture and interior design.

Format and Procedures
This is a hands-on class, with introductive or presentation moments to give further info on each product to the students, by the Marketing manager of Novacolor herself. A group of 10-15 students of intermediate to advance level is preferable. However, each student will benefit of the whole attention of master Isacco.

We’ll cover the correct way to measure, transfer to stencil material, separate for a second overlay, and the tricks for cutting smooth openings. Materials, measuring, overlays, cutting, caffeine & cupcakes; it’s all included! Start you day right by enjoying delicious hot coffee and a breakfast cupcake! Chinoiserie Reinterpreted • Monkeys and Peonies

Students will:

• Learn to transfer designs using the instructor’s special transfer paper.

• Line out the designs with a fine rigger brush. 

•  Experiment with medium and gouache to create transparent peony petals and flowers.

• Create a textured bark for the peony branches 

• Paint peony leaves 

• and learn how to paint a monkey…tail, face, fur and all! 

•  Students will end up with a sample of  a 24x 30” Chinoiserie  Monkey and Peony on canvas.

• There will also be a short discussion of the history of chinoiserie and tips for painting animals in any setting.
