Sandra Jean Coldren was a founding member of the Distelfink Chapter of SALI in 1991. She had a passion for stenciling and eventually created a business named Theorems by SJC.
She was a strong influence through SALI. Not only did she attend conventions, she was president of SALI in 2003. Sandra passed away on January 20, 2015 after battling cancer at the age of 59.
The WARM Place is a place where grieving children and their families find hope. They
The Warm Place
The WARM Place
provide year-round grief support services to children ages 3 1/2 to 18 years old and their families. Also for young adults ages 19 to 25 who have experienced the death of a mother, father, sister, brother, or other loved one. The WARM Place currently works with 376 children and 229 families and was the first grief support center for children in Texas and remains the only one in Tarrant County.
The theme for this mural is "Hope and Healing" and will be located in the main dining area.
Remodeling is on schedule and the dining area of The Warm Place should be available to install the mural in early spring. Theresa Cheek made a quick visit last week to do some touch up on the mural and glue it to a backing board. It is now ready to hang and the staff is very excited. Thanks to all who helped paint and bring this idea to a reality.

IDAL is a group of diverse artisans from all over the world who share a passion for the decorative arts. This year, IDAL is kicking off a campaign that will allow members to get to know each other a little better. #IamIDAL will put a name with a face and give some background information on the artisan featured. Beginning with chapter presidents and then the board, IamIDAL will feature members and share the journey that led us to find IDAL!
Follow the stories as they are published on IDAL's FaceBook page, and other social media. Please join in the journey. Click Here to email for more information.
Profile of Carolina Creative Artisans President, Michelle Byrd.
IDAL How long have you been in business?
MB 12 years.
IDAL What inspires you?
MB Nature! I could spend hours studying the details of the sky, beach, stones, plants, etc.
IDAL What drew you to SALI/IDAL?
MB I took a faux finish class with Donna Mabry in Atlanta and she encouraged us to join SALI. It was the best way to learn and network with other artists. We could attend a convention, get a magazine, and save on insurance. I never could have imagined that one day I would be president of a chapter!
IDAL Tell us something few people know about you.
MB My degree is in secretarial science.
Your Board at Work
If you missed the IDAL Convention last month, new President Lyna Farkas and Vice President Rebecca Slaton entertained a Q&A session in order to address concerns about the future of IDAL. To keep the conversation going IDAL leadership has set up a FaceBook group, "Build a Better IDAL" in the effort to receive continual feedback from IDAL members. Click here to go to the BABI/IDAL FaceBook group page. Click the "Join" button and you will receive an email for your participation.
This year IDAL is in the process of becoming a trade organization. It is a fact that decorative artisans have a real part in the building industry, and IDAL needs to reflect this so that members can grow their businesses.
And so we have a new Mission Statement:
The International Decorative Artisans League (IDAL) is an international non-profit organization dedicated to building a strong community for muralists, faux finishers, stencilers and artisans in related areas of decorative finishing through education, advocacy and recognition of industry excellence.
Other news: Linda Banning is creating our new membership platform and website- which will be up and running by the end of December. We will have our strategic plan posted there.
